New News
Thank you all for showing up for church Sunday even with the holiday weekend in full swing.
We have a sign up sheet for readers of the liturgy and sermon. If you woul be interested in helping with either of these worship services please let Tom Reese know, or sign up on the calendars in the Narthex above the credenza.
PS The SELC District suggests that part of the pastor's retirement preparations should include a "Covenant" that outlines the anticipated relationship between the congregation and the retiring pastor into the future. You can read this document in the IN DEPTH page of these Grace Notes HERE>> (and the notes on the Table Talks from this spring are still there, too).
From Pastor and Bev Cahill
July 10, 2025Dear friends in Christ at Christ the King Lutheran Church,
It's always been our joy and privilege to think of all of you as our friends. We've been with you through all stages of life, through hundreds of experiences both tearful and joyful. We've walked with you and cried with you, rejoiced in your joys and heard your sorrows, and you have done the same for us. You've watched our children grow, as we've watched yours. You've welcomed our grandchildren, as we have welcomed yours. You've blessed us in so many ways throughout the years, and we trust that you have been blessed by us as well. We praise God for everything that He has given us all, as we all step into this new season of our lives. As I said in that sermon on June 29, I will no longer be your pastor, but I will always be your friend.
People have already been asking me "how's your retirement going?" and my answer so far is "it's too soon to tell!" But I can tell you this - Bev and I are so grateful for all of your planning, your work, your fun and laughter, your attendance at the retirement party and the worship service that last weekend in June. Some of your families came from as far away as the other end of the state, which meant that there were quite a few impromptu family gatherings throughout the day. We were absolutely thrilled with everything you arranged, with all the work and creativity that went into it, with everyone that came, with the food and the fun, and with seeing all of you enjoying one another's company all day. Saturday turned out to be one of the best church picnics in the history of church picnics (at least, at Christ the King)! We don't really know who of you may have taken care of some of the details of that day, but we thank you and thank God for all of you, for everything you did and for everyone you are.
Thank you also for your love and kindness that combined into such a generous gift from Christ the King! While we don't have any specific plans for the months to come, we have had the idea for some time that it might be nice to be able to visit our California family more often than every other year, and this gift may help us do that.
We also thought you might like to know that
- All our Cahill kids and grandkids were able to join us for the weekend
- Seven pastors (or retired pastors) and one future pastor showed up at the picnic at one point or another
- Bev's family was represented by four cousins, her sister (and her sons and their families), her brother and his wife (and their sons and their families), and their one living aunt
- My family was represented by my brother and his daughter, and by ten of our cousins
And of course, a number of your families who chose to spend the weekend at Christ the King.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all you have been for us and done for us over the years! And, until we meet again (and we trust that we will some day), may God hold you in the hollow of His hand!

KEYSTONE HABITS
The "Being Challenge" encouraged us to imitate Jesus by developing the habits He Himself used to hold together his life and ministry on earth, like the keystones still do for these arches on a Roman aqueduct at Caesarea on the Mediterranean coast of Israel.
The "Keystone Habits" (in the order you'll see them below) are
1Choosing Church
2Studying Scripture
3Prioritizing Prayer
4Seeking Solitude
5Committing to Community

SEEKING SOLITUDE
Solitude is different from Isolation
To put it as simply as I can, Jesus didn't choose to live like a hermit; He didn't live on a desert island; He didn't live in a cave or a bunker surrounded by razor wire and signs reading "Keep Out!" That's isolation - being cut off from all kinds of human interaction. For some people that's a choice; for others, that's a prison.
Jesus chose to be surrounded community of disciples most of the time, but He also chose certain times and places when He could be away from the crowds and His disciples to focus on His relationship with His Father (that's Solitude).
Being surrounded and supported by other people can be a good thing; seeking solitude to be with the Father and soak in His love is also a good thing. As much as is in your power, don't make it an either/or thing; make it a both/and thing.

Hearts and Hands in Service
The Red Letter "Serving Challenge" helped us to think about why, how, and where we can serve others as we considered our Attitude, Availability, Action, Ability, and Action
Where might YOU serve?
In this section we suggest opportunities for you to serve, or learn to serve, at Christ the King Lutheran Church.
Could one of these be for you?
(No age or gender limits on these, that we can think of!)
NEW! Lawn Tamers
This is the season when many hands (and a big mower!) try to keep the lawn and weeds tamed and under control.
You can volunteer to mow, trim, or whack weeds by signing up on the "2025 Church Mowing Schedule" on a clipboard in the Narthex; or talk to Dale LaRue, Frank Hlad, or Dana Whittenberger.
Light Cleaning
Each week at Christ the King, somebody (often, two somebodies) vacuums the carpets, wipes down counters, cleans the bathrooms, and empties the trash.
All this takes a couple of hours - set your own schedule.
Contact Betty Olah if this might be a way you could serve.

NEW! PODCAST EPISODE
On a recent episode of the Michigan District podcast "Mission in the Mitten", Concordia Center for the Family's (CCF) Executive Director Rev. Dr. Todd Biermann talked about how the CCF's family discipleship model especialy influlences Generation Alpha (children born between 2010 and 2024), and how parents, grandparents, and the congregation can partner together in passing down faith to this younger generation. It all begins with listening and finding ways to cross the generational barriers:
